Soulful artist Kalu James came to the United States from Nigeria when he was 18. Now, at 35, he’s been a fixture on the Austin music scene for well over a decade, both as a solo artist and with his new project Kalu & the Electric Joint.
The Electric Joint pairs James with guitarist Jonathan “J.T.” Holt and drummer John Speice. They honed their musical vision in a three-year residency at the Continental Gallery and have a new album “Time Undone” due out on Dec. 8. It fuses elements of gutsy blues rock, hip-hop and psychedelic fuzz into what they call a “boogie-down blend of ethno-funk and neo-soul.”
The first single, “Too Low to Get High” is a simmering slow burner of a breakup song that covers the rollercoaster of emotion unleashed when a relationship ends.
“‘First there’s the sadness/grief, then the need to pull yourself back up again, and finally the reflection of the whole saga which is a mixed bag of acceptance of fault and the longing of what was,” James said.
